Can My Insurance Company Choose My Body Shop in NY?

No. In New York, you have the right to choose the licensed collision repair shop that repairs your vehicle. Your insurance company can recommend a shop, but it cannot require you to use it, and it must still pay for covered repairs at the shop you choose. Frontline is an independent auto body shop at 1903 Broadway, Brooklyn, and we communicate directly with your carrier on your behalf.

After an accident, our 24-hour tow line is (646) 315-3460 (Frontline Towing, DOT #4518579).

Your right to choose

New York State law protects your right to select a licensed collision repair shop. An insurer may suggest a preferred or Direct Repair Program shop, but the final choice is yours.

Frontline is an independent shop. We are not owned by, affiliated with, or part of any insurance company's DRP or network.

What the insurer must still cover

For repairs covered by your policy, your insurance company must pay reasonable and necessary costs at the shop you selected. We write itemized estimates, document hidden damage with photos, and submit supplements so the estimate matches what the vehicle actually needs.

If a dispute arises about what is covered, we explain the issue in writing and work with you and the adjuster to resolve it.

FAQ

Common questions about shop choice

Can my insurance company require me to use a specific body shop in New York?+

Yes, for covered repairs. Your carrier must pay for repairs that are covered under your policy, regardless of which licensed shop you choose. The shop you select writes the estimate and communicates with the adjuster on your behalf.

A DRP is a network of shops that an insurance company has a contractual relationship with. Insurers may refer you to a DRP shop, but participation is optional for you. Frontline is an independent shop and is not part of any insurer DRP.

Can an insurance company delay my claim because I chose an independent shop?+

Insurers must handle claims according to the terms of your policy and New York insurance regulations. If you feel your claim is being unfairly delayed, document every communication and contact the New York State Department of Financial Services for guidance.
